A quick guide
to interpreting 1-H NMR

Before your quiz:
1. Turn on your hotplate to the setting that will achieve approximately
160 degrees Centigrade.
2. Soak your cloves in the recommended amount of water in the
25 ml Erlenmeyer flask. Presoaking will facilitate distillation
of eugenol.
Weighing paper technique
The picture above is the general scheme for a weighing paper technique
I learned as an undergrad. This is just a suggestion. If it works
for you -- great! Refer to the Roman numerals when looking at
the pictures below.
I. The weighing paper.
II. Fold the paper diagonally (fold a).
III. With the paper doubled-over as a triangle, make another fold
as shown in the right photo (fold b).
IV. Open up the paper again and place it on the balance (in the
same orientation as the previous photo).
V. Carefully place your sample on the weighing paper to the left
of fold b.
Carefully pick up the paper and fold it as shown in the photos.
Your sample is now securely held in the weighing paper and is
ready to be poured into your flask/vial.
